Some substances can be detected from blood or urine up to 3 days after the rape. The following are some common date rape drugs to be aware of and how they affect a person.
Rohypnol
- Also known as Roofies, Rope/Ruffies, R2, Ruffles, Roche and the Forget-Pill
- This is a very potent tranquilizer which has a sedative effect. Can cause amnesia, muscle relaxation and slowing of psychomotor response. Other effects may include blackouts, complete loss of memory, dizziness, disorientation, nausea and difficulty with movements or speaking.
- It can take effect approximately 10 – 20 minutes after indestion
- Rohypnol is odorless and tasteless. It can bubble when dissolved and discolor drinks, however sometimes it dissolves without a trace. Although, since 1997, the manufacturer of Rohypnol has placed a blue dye in every pill, which is most visible in light colored drinks. There is no currently accepted medical use for Rohypnol in the United States.
- It can be added to any liquid (effect lasting 2-8 hours) but when added to alcohol if reduces inhibition and creates amnesia (effect lasting 8-24 hours)
- Rohypnol can be detected in the blood for 24 hours and in the urine for 48 hours.
- Some individuals use Rohypnol as an alcohol extender for a rapid and dramatic high. This is something to watch for in Social settings if someone seems extremely intoxicated after consuming only a small amount of alcohol.
Gamma Hydroxy Butyrate (GHB)
- GHB is also known as Liquid Extasy, Ecstasy, Liquid X, Scoop and Easy Lay
- GHB is odorless, colorless, liquid depressant with anesthetic qualities
- It is also used as an amino acid by bodybuilders.
- GHB is usually distributed as a sodium salt in powder or tablet commonly dissolved in water.
- GHB affects everyone differently, but most commonly it gives a feeling of relaxation, loss of social inhibitions and tranquility.
- GHB can take effect 10-15 minutes after ingestion and lasts 2-3 hours UNLESS combined with alcohol, where effects may last 20 – 30 hours. Large doses can induce sudden sleep within 5 -10 minutes.
- GHB is often used with other drugs, including Ecstasy, which makes if difficult to tell whether effects are directly related to the GHB use or its reaction to other substances.
- GHB has different potencies depending on how it is made, therefore each batch is different making the effects different in every case.
KETAMINE HYDROCHLORIDE (Ketamine)
Ketamine is also known as K, Special K, Vitamin K and Ket.
- Ketamine is a new drug added to the date rape or predator drug category. It is a powerful anesthetic used as an animal tranquilizer.
- It is available in liquid, powder or pill form.
- Ketamine causes hallucinations, amnesia and dissociation (a feeling where the mind seems separated from the body).
CLONAZEPAM
Clonazepam (benzodiazepine) is in the same drug family as Rohypnol and produces the same sedative effects. It is marketed by F. Hoffman-La Roche (makers of Rohypnol) under the brand name Klonopin as an antiseizure and antipanic drug.
It is more dangerous in combination with alcohol. Alcohol intensifies the effects of Clonazepam and mixing the two can result in severe damage or death.
It is legal by prescription (unlike Rohypnol, which is illegal to use, possess, or distribute in the United States). Brand names are Klonopin (U.S.) and Rivotril (Australia and Mexico). Street names include Roofies and “the dollar date.”
Klonopin (La Roche’s brand of Clonazepam) comes in small, colorful pills with K-shaped perforations through the center. Klonopin is available in doses of 0.5 mg (orange), 1 mg (blue), and 2 mg (white). Dosages are marked on the pills. Clonazepam in general may be a pill or a yellow powder.
Aside from its prescription use, Clonazepam is sometimes used to enhance the effects of heroin and other opiates. Clonazepam use in date rape has risen as Rohypnol has become harder to get and easier to detect in drinks. Pills are available on the black market for as little as $1 each.

I was drugged with the date rape drug 2 days ago. I did not go to the law because i am a sex worker but having a problem understanding how someone could think it is ok to drug someone without thier knowledge. and you meantion to take a self defense class how do you defend yourself from this

K. I’m sorry this happened to you. Even though you didn’t go to the police you can still get counseling from either your local crisis center or go to rainn.org to find the nearest counselor to you. You ask how do you defend yourself to a drug rape and what I do is never accept a drink from someone nor do I leave my drink in a room when I’m not there. You always have your drink with you. And if you are at someones house and they offer you coffee, drink whatever you watch them make it or don’t drink it. Now that you’ve been through it you will see how easy it is.
